How to Convert PNG to JPG Online

Converting PNG to JPG using this tool takes under a minute and requires no software installation. The entire process runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API, so your image files never leave your device.

Start by uploading your PNG image. You can drag and drop the file directly onto the upload area, click the area to open a file browser, or paste an image from your clipboard using Ctrl+V. The tool accepts PNG files up to 20 megabytes in size.

After uploading, conversion starts automatically at the default quality of 90%. You will see both the original PNG and the converted JPG side by side so you can compare the results. The file sizes of both versions are shown below the previews.

Use the Quality slider to adjust how much compression is applied. Moving the slider left reduces file size but introduces some compression. Moving it right maintains higher quality but keeps a larger file. At 90%, most images look identical to the original with significantly smaller file sizes. After finding the right quality, click the Download JPG button to save the file.

This tool works on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone. Internet speed has no effect on conversion speed since everything runs locally in your browser. Large PNG images may take a few seconds on older mobile devices, but the result is the same.

PNG vs JPG — What's the Difference?

PNG and JPG are the two most common image formats for photographs and graphics. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right format for each situation.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format. Every pixel is stored exactly as it appears, without any quality reduction. PNG also supports transparent backgrounds, called alpha transparency. When you take a screenshot on Windows or Mac, the file is saved as PNG. When designers export logos or icons with clear backgrounds, those are also PNG files. The tradeoff is file size — PNG photographs are large, often five to fifteen times the size of an equivalent JPG.

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy format designed for photographs. It removes fine image details that the human eye is less likely to notice, which dramatically reduces file size while keeping visual quality acceptable. JPG does not support transparency. Any area that was transparent in a PNG becomes a solid color — white by default in this tool.

For Indian government exam portals, JPG is the required format. SSC, IBPS, UPSC, RRB, and virtually all state PSC portals specify JPG or JPEG for photo and signature uploads. A PNG file, even if it looks identical to a JPG visually, will be rejected with an error like "Invalid file format" or "Only JPG accepted."

Use PNG when you are editing images and want to preserve all details for later use. Use JPG when you need a small file for uploading, emailing, or sharing online.

What Happens to PNG Transparency?

Transparent areas in PNG images are filled with a white background when converting to JPG. This is because JPG format does not support alpha transparency — there is no concept of a transparent pixel in JPG. Every pixel must have a solid color value.

Our tool uses the HTML5 Canvas API to fill the entire canvas with white (#FFFFFF) before drawing your PNG image on top. Any transparent pixel in the PNG then shows the white fill underneath, resulting in a clean white background in the JPG output.

For government exam photos and signatures, white background is always the correct choice. Passport photos must have a plain white background. Signature scans on white paper convert perfectly. Thumb impression scans on white paper also work correctly.

If your PNG image has a solid colored background (not transparent), that background is preserved exactly as-is during conversion. The white fill only affects pixels that were transparent in the original PNG. You will see the exact colors from your original image in all non-transparent areas.

If you need a background color other than white, you would need to edit the image in a photo editor before converting. This tool uses white as the standard fill because it is the correct choice for all exam portal photo requirements.

PNG to JPG for Exam Portal Upload

All major Indian competitive examination portals require photographs and signatures in JPG or JPEG format. When your image is in PNG format, the portal will reject it at the upload step with an error message about file format.

SSC (Staff Selection Commission) requires JPG for photo (275×354 pixels, 20-50KB) and signature (140×60 pixels, 10-20KB). IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) portals require JPG for photo (200×230 pixels, 20-50KB). UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) requires JPG for photographs. RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) portals across all zones require JPEG format.

The process for exam portal preparation using this tool is straightforward. First, convert your PNG image to JPG using this converter. Next, check whether the converted JPG meets the dimension requirements for your specific exam. If dimensions need adjustment, use our exam-specific resize tools — SSC Photo Resize, IBPS Photo Resize, or the general Image Resize tool. Finally, if the file size exceeds the portal limit, use our Image Compress tool to bring it to the required KB range.

Many applicants discover format issues only at the last step of form submission. Converting to JPG well before your application deadline avoids this problem and gives you time to verify the final image meets all requirements.

File Size Comparison: PNG vs JPG

The file size difference between PNG and JPG is consistently dramatic for photographs. A 200×230 pixel passport photo saved as PNG is typically 150-400KB. The same photo converted to JPG at 90% quality is usually 15-60KB. This is a reduction of 70-90% with no visible difference in quality.

For full-size smartphone photos, the gap is even larger. A 3000×4000 pixel photograph exported from an image editor as PNG can be 10-20MB. The same image saved as JPG at 90% is typically 2-4MB, and at 85% quality it drops to 1-2MB.

Exam portals set strict file size limits because they store millions of uploaded photos. Typical limits are 20KB minimum and 200KB maximum for photographs. PNG files almost always exceed these limits, while JPG files at appropriate quality settings easily fall within the required range.

The quality slider in this tool lets you find the optimal balance. At 90%, the image looks excellent and the file size is well within most portal limits. If you need an even smaller file, reduce quality to 80-85%. If the converted JPG still exceeds the portal limit, use the Image Compress tool to target a specific KB size with precision.

Career in Government Exams — Quick Guide

India offers millions of government job opportunities through examinations conducted by central and state government bodies. These stable, well-paying positions attract candidates from every academic background. Whether you are pursuing bank exams like IBPS PO and SBI PO, central government posts through SSC CGL and CHSL, railway jobs through RRB, civil services through UPSC, or state government posts through various PSCs, the application process begins online.

Every online application requires a passport photo and signature scan at minimum. Most exams also require a thumb impression image and sometimes a handwritten declaration. These images must meet exact specifications — format, dimensions, and file size — that vary by exam and notification.

Preparing your documents correctly from the start saves significant time. Keep a high-quality original photo taken on white background. From this original, you can create JPG versions resized and compressed to different specifications for different exams. Store your signature scan, thumb impression image, and any other required documents similarly.

Exam notifications are released months in advance, but many candidates rush documents in the final days before the deadline. Portal congestion and last-minute technical issues are common near deadlines. Completing your photo and document preparation early, testing the upload process, and having correctly formatted files ready reduces stress significantly.

Using the right tools for each step — this PNG to JPG converter, followed by the appropriate resize tool, followed by compression if needed — ensures your files will pass portal validation. Every rejected upload during form submission costs valuable time that is better spent on exam preparation itself.
